Maxwell Lagrangian modified by string interaction

Abstract

Corrections, quadratic in the string tension, to the Lagrangian of the electromagentic field, were found from Witten's field theory of open bosonic strings. The results obtained are in agreement with those previously derived from the sigma-model and the S-matrix first-quantization approach.
