Conclusions
1. We formulated the boundary conditions and presented a method of solving a problem of the interaction of a crack with a field of microcracks taking into account possible contact between the crack edges.
2. The results show that the microcracks subjected to the effect of the external field of stresses and of the main crack can be in the open or completely closed positions. The microcracks may cause both partial and complete closure of the main crack.
3. The size of the closure zone of the macrocrack (in the transverse shear conditions) has no effect on the configuration of the regions of closure of the microdefects.
4. The value of kII on the main crack can be computed without taking its closure into account (“overlap” of the crack boundaries is permitted). To calculate kI accurately it is essential to take into account the presence of contact zones.
