Morphologische Untersuchungen am Pankreas der Ratte im Kaliummangel unter besonderer Berücksichtigung der Langerhansschen Inseln

Morphological studies of the pancreas of rats in potassium deficiency, with special reference to the islets of Langerhans

Summary

The morphology of the pancreas of rats in severe potassium depletion was studied following 18 hours of fasting. While the exocrine pancreas showed no differences from control animals, the A-cells in the islets of Langerhans of the control animals were decreased in size and degranulated following the fast. In potassium depletion this did not happen; on the contrary the A-cells seemed enlarged. The implications for glucagon secretion and electrolyte metabolism are discussed, with special reference to whether the secretion of glucagon by the A-cells is impaired in potassium depletion.
