Summary
1. Histochemical examinations demonstrate that the pigment in the mucous membrane in melanosis of the colon is different from lipofuscin in the cardiac muscle and from the melanin of the retina.
2. Histological, histochemical, chemical and infrared-spectrographical investigations of the isolated and purified pigment show structural similarities to melanin. The central areas of the pigmentary particles resemble lipofuscin. Both the pigment in melanosis and the melanin contain nearly the same quantity of copper, which is 5–6 times greater than that of lipofuscin.
3. It is suggested that the pigment in melanosis is derived from copper-containing proteins or amino-acids either found in the mucous membrane, or absorbed from the ingesta. The development of the pigment out of haemoglobin is unlikely.
Zusammenfassung
