Conclusions
It has been shown by the ESR method that heating poly-p-phenyleneterephthalamide fibers in air at 250°C leads to an increase in content of paramagnetic centers in the fiber. Simultaneously, a decrease in strength and in elongation at break of the fiber is observed.
The set of data obtained permits one to conclude that the decrease in fiber strength on heating is caused mainly by cleavage of chemical bonds in the polymer chain.
