Summary
The total number and percentage of specific chemoreceptor cells were determined in 200 pairs of carotid bodies from unselected human autopsies. In pulmonary, cardiac, and cerebral diseases the ratio of cystic cells with clear nuclei to those with hyperchromatic nuclei and eosinophilic cytoplasm was about 9:1. In studies of the carotid bodies of patients with paralysis of the respiratory centers cells with hyperchromatic nuclei were increased. Consequently, the cellular pattern of the human carotid body is significantly changed only when an oxygen deficiency is combined with paralysis of the respiratory centers. With excessive stimulation of chemoreceptor cells the hyperchromatic cells proliferate. On the other hand, oxygen deficiency of pulmonary diseases does not lead to cellular exhaustion, since with a functionally active respiratory center the physiological capacity of the carotid body apparently is not exceeded.
