Conclusion

The information presented here confirms that the content of hydroxylions, carbon disulfide, and water influences significantly the chemical and colloidal processes during the ripening of the viscose as well as the principal properties of the viscose, viz., viscosity, ripeness, colloidal stability, and homogeneity. The spinning conditions for viscose rayon, i.e., stability and the rates of precipitation and decomposition of the xanthate, also depend on these factors to a significant extent.

In recent years numerous suggestions were put forward for introducing important changes in the production conditions and composition of viscose.

One of the important problems in the production of viscoses with improved properties consists of reducing their viscosity by diminishing the structural component without varying the ratio NaOH/α-cellulose which would make it possible to increase the cellulose content of the viscose. One might suggest the following measures for achieving this effect:

  • an increase in the shear stress in the viscose flowing along the pipelines and through the spinneret holes;

  • the introduction of additives of a polyhydroxyl character which would form complex groups with the hydroxyls of the cellulose;

  • an increase in the ripening temperature of the viscose.

This method would, moreover, make it possible to reduce the ripening time. A significant increase in the ripening temperature would, however, necessitate a search for ways of reducing the rates of dexanthation and of the secondary reactions which would offer considerable scope for the production of viscoses with improved properties.

The priority task of researchers working on the problem of optimizing the conditions of viscose rayon production is clearly that of developing methods of producing low-structured viscoses possessing long-term homogeneity and stability.
