Summary
In 192 liver needle biopsies prepared with Wachstein-Meisel method, we found a development of abnormal projections of bile canaliculi 95 times. Of 95 biopsies, 50 also revealed other types of canalicular abnormalities. From the intensity of changes seen 4 groups could be formed. The maximal changes appeared in complicated fatty liver, in cirrhosis and in chronic hepatitis. The changes described were particularly focal. The pathogenesis of the formation of projections is ascribed to the combined actions of several factors, mainly to hepatocellular damage with obstruction. The relationships of these morphologic changes to other histological findings in the liver are discussed.
