Summary
Rats were treated with Dihydrotachysterol (0.1 mg twice a week) and the following electron microscopic and microradiographic findings were made:
-
1.
The cancellous bone of the epiphysis and metaphysis were sclerotized by newly formed bone which appears in the microradiogramm to be incompletely calcified.
-
2.
Electron microscopically and microradiographically there were decalcified regions around numerous osteocyte lacunae. In the old, fully calcified bone these altered lacunae were arranged in small groups; in the young, incompletely calcified bone they were dispersed more homogenously.
-
3.
In the mucopolysaccharide sheath of many osteocytes we found different quantities of a material made up of fine, electron-dense particles. We presume this material to be free calcium dissolved from the surrounding bone matrix.
We consider these alterations to be the morphological equivalent of osteocytic activity in the metabolism of calcium. We discuss the relationship of these alterations to “periosteocytic osteolysis” and “onkosis”.
