Summary
The number of mast-cells in the renal cortex was determined in 41 cases of hepatic cirrhosis with ascites. In more than half of the cases there was a definite increase in mastcells as compared to normal and arteriolosclerotic kidneys.
The renal mastocytosis was considered a compensatory reaction counteracting the disturbed salt and water metabolism resulting from a secondary aldosteronism. The renal mastocytosis probably exerted its effect by means of heparin production on the basis of the aldosteron-inhibiting and/or renin-inhibiting action of heparin.
