Summary
If unsteady influences such as a periodic motion of the wall or an oscillating pressure drop are superimposed on a steady flow of a nonlinear viscoelastic fluid through a stright pipe, the mean volume discharge per unit time may increase considerably under certain circumstances. A theory is developed the aim of which is to find the mean flow rate in unsteady pipe flows as a function of the parameters of the problem including the material constants of the fluid and to become familiar with the conditions under which the mean rate of discharge exceeds that of the steady base flow. The flow is assumed to be slow so that the constitutive equation of a fourth order fluid can be used. By that the shear thinning properties as well as the memory of the fluid are taken into account. In spite of the rather complicated constitutive equation, the analytical results have a simple structure and can be written in a concise form by making use of suitable dimensionless darameters. They, especially, give information about the conditions for the greatest possible mean volume pischarge per unit time.
