Summary
In 14 healthy subjects and 23 patients with chronic non-specific bronchitis, breathing a NO2-air mixture (5–8 ppm NO2), the protective action of atropine, meclastine and orciprenaline was examined. Concerning the negative impact of NO2 on the respiratory gas exchange and the airway resistance meclastine in comparison with atropine and orciprenaline showed a pronounced protective effect. It is concluded that NO2 acts by release of histamine causing a bronchiolar, alveolar and interstitial oedema.
