Summary
1. The effects of adrenaline, noradrenaline, isoproterenol, tyramine, carbachol, 5-hydroxytryptamine and electrical stimulation of the vagus on antral, pyloric and duodenal motility in rabbits were investigated by means of balloons and by recording the outflow rates.
2. The catecholamines relaxed the antral and duodenal muscles. This effect was abolished by propranolol. The contraction of the pylorus after catecholamines was blocked by phentolamine.
3. Tyramine was ineffective on the antrum and the duodenum, but contracted the pylorus. After pretreatment with propranolol the antrum and duodenum were contracted by tyramine. The pyloric contraction caused by tyramine was not affected by phentolamine or propranolol.
4. All of the intestinal regions investigated were contracted by 5-hydroxytryptamine, carbachol and electrical stimulation of the vagus. The cholinergic stimuli were blocked by atropine, but only the pyloric contraction produced by 5-hydroxytryptamine was diminished by methysergide.
Zusammenfassung
