Summary
The calculation of optimum diffusors for subsonic flow is presented, based on an approximation theory for laminar and turbulent boundary layers by A. Wals. The theoretical investigation shows that the losses of the diffuser become a minimum if the shear stress at the wall vanishes. For this optimum case the differential equations can be integrated and formulae both for the pressure distribution and the development of the displacement thickness are obtained which allow to calculate the shape of the diffuser wall. The analytical expressions show explicitly the strong influence of the initial values on the pressure rise. The theory agrees satisfactorily with published measurements.
