Summary
The influence of density changes and heat transfer on compressible turbulent boundary layers is investigated in order to find laws for velocity distribution, skin friction, and dissipation integral depending only on transport properties, Mach number, Reynolds number, and a heat transfer parameter. For this investigation the boundary layer is divided into a sublayer, an inner layer and an outer layer whose velocity distributions can be determined by applying Prandtl's mixing length hypothesis, and a density distribution derived by van Driest. The integration constant for the inner layer and the two constants in the law of the outer layer are found from experiments. Knowing the velocity distributions in the two layers and assuming a continuous transition between them a skin friction law can be derived. By use of this skin friction law it is possible to obtain simple relationships for the rate of heat transfer and the dissipation integral. Theoretical and measured skin friction values are in good agreement. Measurements of the dissipation integral and the rate of heat transfer were not yet available.
