On the existence of characteristic directions in three-dimensional photoelasticity

Summary

It is shown that the existence of the characteristic directions follows from a relationship derived in [1], contrary to the conclusion of the authors. Some other proofs of the existence of the characteristic directions are also given. It is pointed out that in many cases characteristic directions deviate considerably from principal directions.
