Summary

The effect of initial imperfections on the critical bifurcation parameter of a rocking block rolling without slipping on a cylinder is investigated. The theory is developed in terms of generalized coordinates. It is shown that the influence of the imperfections is modelled by a Whitney cusp. Experiments on simple model blocks and cylinders made of cardboard with sand paper contact surfaces to assure rolling but not sliding are examined. The theoretical and experimental results are in close qualitative agreement. The proposed model also serves as a simple machine to verify by experiment the existence of complementary equilibrium paths.

Übersicht

Der Einfluß von Anfangsimperfektionen auf den kritischen Verzweigungsparameter eines auf einem Halbzylinder abrollenden Sohaukelblocks wird untersucht. Die Theorie ist in verallgemeinerten Koordinaten ausgedrückt, und es wird gezeigt, daß der Einfluß der Imperfektionen als eine Whitney-Spitze dargestellt werden kann. Versuche mit einfachen, aus Pappe mit Sandpapierkontaktflächen hergestellten Blöcken und Zylindern zeigen Ergebnisse, welche die theoretisch hergeleiteten Gleichgewichtskurven experimentell bestätigen.
