Abstract

The Hückel and Lennard-Jones approximation is used to show that structural distortions with bond-length alternation in the chains are impossible because of the high rigidity of the σ core in a conjugated system for any long polyconjugated system of polyacene type that can be represented as polyene chains linked together.
