Extraction of macrocyclic cobalt(II) and (III) complexes by solutions of caprylic acid in n-heptanol and tetrachloromethane

Theoretical and Experimental Chemistry Aims and scope

Abstract

Compexes of cobalt(III) and (II) with macrocyclic ligand 5,7,7,12,14, 14-hexamethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradeca-4,11-diene are effectively extracted by solutions of caprylic acid in n-heptanol and tetrachloromethane. The stoichiometry was studied using the “bilogarithmic method,” and the extraction constants of the complexes were determined. It was shown that in n-heptanol a monomeric, and in tetrachloromethane, a dimeric form of caprylic acid participate in the extraction equilibria. The presence of a macrocyclic ring leads to an identical stoichiometry of the extracted cobalt complexes, irrespective of the magnitude of the charge on the central atom.
