Summary
Rheoencephalograms (REG) and ophthalmodynamograms (ODG) were recorded simultaneously in 21 subjects without demonstrable vascular pathology. Subjects were breathing either normal air (control) or 8% CO2 in oxygen. Control tracings revealed that the REG-phase had a later onset (0.014 sec) than the corresponding ODG-phase. The anacrote sections on the REG recordings were much longer (0.065 sec) than those on the ODG traces. The differing volumes and lengths of the respective vascular tress and their mean distances from the carotid bifurcation are regarded as the causes of these differences.
Inhalation of 8% CO2 causes a further (0.002 sec) retardation of onset of REG and prolongation (0.027 sec) of the rising part of the ODG, while the anacrote part of the REG trace remains constant. These temporal relationships and the changes induced in them by CO2 are statistically significant. They are interpreted as follows: retardation of onset of REG phase means slowing of pulse wave velocity; we propose this be indicative of increase in elastic properties of cerebral vessels. Prolongation of rising part of ODG is assumed to be a further demonstration of the domineering influence of the external carotid artery on the origin of ODG.
