Abstract

The property of Chichibabin's and Wittig's hydrocarbons to convert para-hydrogen into ortho-hydrogen is explained by a quantum mechanical treatment of collision processes between hydrogen and hydrocarbon molecules. The interaction of the collision partners is presumed to be electron-spin proton-spin coupling. The agreement of the qualitative results of the theory and the experimental data is satisfactory.
