Abstract
The Jahn-Teller theorem is proved again in a way roughly outlined some time ago [4]. In contrast to the way chosen by Jahn and Teller the new method of proof eliminates the necessity of detailed discussions of specified symmetries and their realizations in molecules, and clearly shows the physical basis common to all special cases on which the theorem does apply. Spin-orbit and spin-spin interaction of the electrons are taken into account from the very beginning of the proof, and the aid of tables with numerous detailed data illustrating normal coordinates etc. is made unnecessary. In the appendix a theorem on the induction of representations of finite groups is given which makes the proof possible in its present form.
