Summary
Studies of the effect of intravenous injections of spore suspensions of an amylobacter strain on various animal tumors (rat tumors: T8-Guerin Tumor, the Walker-Tumor, the Yoshida Tumor; mouse tumors: the Harding-Passey-Melanoma, the Ehrlich Tumor after intramuscular and intravenous inoculation, and the spontaneous breast carcinoma; and the rabbit Brown-Pearce Tumor) are reported. In all of these tumors a partial destruction could be brought about. Intravenous and intraperitoneal injections of the spore suspensions are more effective than local injections into the tumor. It is difficult to cause a necrosis of the residual tumor even though multiple massive injections are given. It is possible, however, by simultaneously injecting prednisolon, or by using an extract from cultures of the amylbacter organisms, to increase the tissue destruction caused by simple injections of spores. The spores grow out only in sparse numbers in artificially induced necroses of the skin of mice, and are rapidly eliminated without themselves causing necroses. A multiplication of the organisms as is found in tumors does not occur. It is most likely, that the small spontaneous necroses in the tumor represent the regions where the spores first propagate, and that only in these parts of the tumor is the milieu favorable for a rapid and massive increase in the number of spores. The products of metabolism that are thusly formed may well cause the necrosis of the tumor.
