Summary
Form, proportions and stress of the scapula have been studied in carnivores and ungulates. A statistical analysis revealed that the length-breadth-relation and accordingly the area of the scapula too are independent from the body size. Inside determined groups there are no changes of proportions due to increasing body size. Scapulae are relative broad in felidae, foxes, pigs and caprini. The position of spina scapulae is not influenced by body size. Breadth of fossa supraspinata varies more widely than that of fossa infraspinata. In domestic dogs, it can be modified by the “Wuchsform”. Scapulae of equal size can show different proportions of their fossae.
For analysis of scapula-stress were presumed: 1. Theories about the reaction of the tissue of support on mechanical stress derived from other sceletal elements by Pauwels and Kummer are valid for the scapula too. 2. Scapula can be seen as frame construction for static analysis; the trunk-weight hung up on the vertebral edge of the scapula. According the “Minimum-maximum-law” the stress should be held as small as possible. Therefore the optimal form which must avoid bending stress was calculated for different load positions. The resulting arcforms are identical with the realized anatomical substratum.
