Summary
The ascites cells of the mouse tumor NK/Ly lymphoma were studied with the light and electron microscopes. In smear preparations fixed with osmic acid a small number of dark brown to pale brown cells could be distinguished. In both types of cells variable numbers of osmiophilic granules could be recognized. Electron-microscopically many cells were striking because of their dense and finely granular cytoplasm. Frequently intensely osmiophilic granules 600 Å in diameter could be observed in the mitochondria, and these possibly participated in the development of the mitochondria. Some mitochondria appeared in giant forms. The endoplastic reticulum and the Golgi structures of these tumor cells were not essentially different from those of other types of tumors. Noteworthy was the polymorphism of the nucleoli, which showed a vacuole-like clearing (nucleolar vacuoles), as well as osmiophilic granules. Virus-like particles were not found.
