Summary
The action of a single high dose of X-rays (20 kr, 60 kr and 120 kr) on in-vitro mouse ascites tumor cells was estimated by observing the formation of cytoplasmic blebs (“potocytosis”) and by staining the cells with lissamine green, an acid vital stain. Both changes occurred after a latent period which depended upon the dose of X-rays and the storage temperature after irradiation. They marked two different stages of cell damage by X-rays and could be identified as irradiation damage only when similar morphologic changes, which can develop during storage in-vitro without previous irradiation, were avoided by suitable storage temperatures.
