Abstract
It is shown that the electrode polarization is not the sum of the activation and concentration polarizations. Introducing the concepts of overvoltage of the process (deviation of the electrode potential from the thermodynamic value), of overvoltage of the reaction, a total concentration polarization, and a thermodynamic concentration polarization, the equations of these functions are derived and their properties examined.
