Summary
The aerobic glycolysis of mouse ascites-tumour cells is reduced by E 39 (Bayer) and Ca 51 (Cassella) in vitro. In a medium (Krebs-Ringer solution) free of glucose, E 39 strongly inhibits the respiration while the effect of Ca 51 is less pronounced. After adding glucose, the respiration markedly increases and exceeds the Q O 2 of the control cells. We consider this phenomenon to be the expression of the “metabolism of injured cells” (Druckrey), caused by the inhibitor substances. The metabolism of ascites-carcinoma cells from mice treated with E 39 and Ca 51 in vivo was not significantly altered in comparison to the metabolism of the control cells. It is not possible, however, to judge the therapeutic effect of E 39 and Ca 51 by means of the authors' results because carcinogenesis in man differs markedly from that in mice (rapidity of tumour-development, virulence of tumour cells, relation between mass of tumour and host etc.).
