Summary
232 mice (strain NMRI) were given in their drinking water 3% of a tensid (“Pril liquid”) 3.4 benzpyrene, and benzpyrene with potassium chromate. Tumors of the forestomach were found in 143 mice [59 papillomas, 57 keratinised and 26 non-keratinised squamous-cell carcinomas and one epithélioma métatypique intermédiaire (Darier)]. Among the control groups (227 mice), only 15 animals showed a papillomatosis of the forestomach. The mice with the papillomatosis lived on the average shorter than the animals with carcinomas. Some of the mice with papillomas died very early with cachexia, because the tumors narrowed the gastric lumen and thereby hindered the normal intake of fodder. The survival time of the mice with non-keratinised squamous-cell carcinomas was shorter than that of the mice with keratinised squamous cell carcinomas. No predominance of sex could be pointed out among the mice with tumors.
