Summary

The authors have tested the tumor inhibiting effects of several nitrogen mustard (HN2)-carbohydrate combinations and have established that the nitrogen mustard—mannitol preparation (BCM) surpasses nitrogen mustard in its tumor inhibiting and hematological effects.

The substance is much less toxic and has clinically a wider range of use than nitrogen mustard. As shown by animal experimentation, it has an inhibiting effect on the extension of metastases, so that it could be used prophylactically in surgery. On the basis of these positive results, the authors recommend that clinical tests be carried out, not only in blood dyscrasies, but also in carcinomas and sarcomas.
