Summary
In NMRI mice, NNM induced various types of tumors of the lung, liver, kidney, paranasal sinuses, and stomach. The especially common, non-metastasizing pulmonary tumors may be separated histologically into benign and malignant adenomas, bronchial papillomas, and a single hornifying squamous, cell carcinoma, the origin of which is not clear. For a certain time a high degree of polymorphism appears in the bronchial mucosa, which on prolongation of the experiment is lost by epithelial desquamation often then merging into a squamous metaplasia. The nuclear polymorphism of the bronchial epithelium is the result of mitotic disturbances that occur in the same form in the liver. The mitotic disturbances, consequently, may be understood as indicating one mode of action of NNM, which apparently is not decisive, for carcinogenesis.
