Summary
134 parathyroid glands of 61 deceased human beings of all age groups as well as upper parathyroid glands of 5 adult horses were examined for the occurrence of cysts, and their frequency, histological structure, and the chemical composition of their contents was described. They are found, usually in the singular, more frequently in the lower parathyroid glands than in the upper ones, and are differently sized, circular, lined with a singlelayer, cubic epithelium, and surround a homogeneous material containing proteins and glucoor mucoproteids, respectively.
In order to put an end to the confusingly large number of designations used for the epithelial cavities of the parathyroid glands, which makes communication virtually impossible, we recommend to reduce them to three morphogenetically determinable basic forms:
-
a)
Pseudofollicles. These include the exclusively secretorily (without cell destruction) developed parathyroid colloid as well as the mechanical and edematous fissures.
-
b)
Colloid vesicles. They contain the colloid developed by cell necrosis, are circular or oval and surrounded by a flat epithelium as well as by a thin sheath of connective tissue. As the contents will rapidly become thick, solid, and rigid, the designation “colloid balls” should therefore be used for older stages.
-
c)
Cysts. These include all innate cavities surrounded by epithelium. Experimentally produced “cysts” do not belong to this classification of naturally occurring forms of cavities.
-
a)
