Summary
-
1.
The arterial and venous sides of the microcirculation in the normal human thoracic aorta have been shown.
-
2.
The arteries originate from the ostia of the intercostal arteries. They are distributed to the adventitia and outer two-thirds of the media.
-
3.
The veins originate in the inner third of the media and drain through the artery wall into circumferential adventitial venous plexuses, which are tributaries of the intercostal veins.
-
4.
The terminal arterio-venous anastomosis occurs in the inner third of the media.
-
5.
The intima is avascular.
