Summary
During the movement of molars in direction to the oral cavity epithelial hoods are formed on all cusps of the teeth. An increased keratinisation takes place in these epithelial formations. In the period of eruption the epithelial hoods and the oral epithelium unite. The central portion of every epithelial hood decayes during the further movement of the tooth. The lateral part persists as part of the internal marginal epithelium of the gingiva and formes a intraepithelial lamella around every tooth. This keratinized lamina is liable to form a fissure and is a “Locus minoris resistentiae” in the epithelial attachment for the whole life.
