Summary

Epithelio-neural junctions between the basal cells of the follicle epithelium of human hairs and some peritrichial nerve fibers have been found with the electron microscope. The axons in this regions have no synaptic vesicles but numerous mitochondria (Dendrites).

Such junctions are able to transduce mechanical stimuli from the hair and the follicle epithelium into generator potentials and serve as Mechano-Receptors or Starter-organs for the membran depolarization of the afferent peritrichial nerves.
