Summary
The first stages of the developing zonular fibres in the 16-day rat embryo are observed as relatively densely packed fibril-bundles, crossing the “faisceau isthmique”. In the later stages of life (newborn, 20 and 40 day, 5, 10 and 18 month rat) the diameter and cross-striation of the single fibrils show no remarkable difference. Usually the diameter is 80–140 Å, and the periodicity of the cross-striation 70–140 Å. Also the interspaces between the fibrils of the zonular fibril-bundles do not seem to change.
On the other hand, the aggregation and cross-linkage of the zonular fibrils increases during maturation. Therefore in the adult rat eye over-periods occur, which are only seldom visible in the embryonal rat zonula. We observed even a periodicity of 500 Å, which is in the range of the over-periods of mature collagen.
Like the vitrosin fibrils, from which the single zonular fibrils do not distinguish, the zonular fibrils must be regarded as a special form of collagen. They are produced by mesenchymal cells within the isthmus; in postnatal stages by fibroblasts. As well as the cells of the hyaloid vessels, most of the free mesenchymal cells and later of the fibroblasts undergo a process of cellular degeneration. Membrane-bound spaces in the region of the adult zonula apparatus must be regarded as late stages in the degeneration of the fibroblasts or as relicts of the vessel wall cells.
