On the vascularization of the area postrema and of the dorsal side of the medulla oblongata in the human

Summary

The area postrema is part of the floor of the 4th ventricle. The vessels in the area postrema are large and organised in a close network. Along the path of these vessels, numerous bulges or capillary loops are found beneath the ventricular ependyma. Their structure is similar to that of other circumventricular organs.

The arteries reach the area postrema on its external side, the veins on the other hand leave from the internal side. Both the veins and the arteries are dependent on the larger vessels of the dorsal side of the medulla.

No consistent anastomoses of importance connect the vascular network of the area postrema to the vessels of the choroidal plexus or to the vessels of the underlying nervous tissue.
