Abstract
The theoretical basis of the calculation of mica analyses to structural formulas is not unequivocal because the amount of oxygen present in the mineral cannot be determined independently by present analytical methods. From two hypothetical assumptions, i.e. O+OH+F = 12 and sum of cationic valencies = 22, the latter one is selected for programming of a digital computer. The structural formulas of micas thus obtained from the chemical analyses have a normative character, i.e. they do not strictly represent in every case the actual distribution of the individual atoms in the various positions within the structure.
