Summary
Metal borohydrides can be assayed by oxidation with excess hypochlorite in strong alkaline solution with a relative standard deviation of 0,2%. Standardisation and back titration of hypochlorite are performed iodometrically.
The direct titration of boranate with hypochlorite yields too low values.
In alkaline medium some other oxidising agents do not react with boranate at all, or the reaction is disturbed by loss of active hydrogen as side-reaction.
Conditions for the quantitative reaction of boranate with hypochlorite are discussed.
