Summary
Preparation and chemical behaviour of a few organolead compounds are investigated and methods for testing their purity are given. Triphenyllead hydroxide is almost completely converted to the anhydride hexaphenyl dilead oxide in chloroform solution; the latter reacts quickly with aqueous solutions of acids to the triphenyllead compounds of the corresponding anions. In many cases, these compounds are soluble in organic solvents; therefore, the anions can be extracted from aqueous solutions by chloroform solutions of hexaphenyl dilead oxide. The aqueous solutions should be slightly acid. If they contain sulphuric acid, the reagent is precipitated at pH values below 3.5–4. The anions can be reextracted from chloroform by alkali hydroxide solutions.
