Summary
Electrophoretic studies have shown that the upper layers of skin (epidermis and horny layer) of the human back contain at least 5 ester-splitting enzymes. Comparative studies including immunoelectrophoretic analysis on the contents of epidermal cysts, sebaceous cysts, and on comedones revealed that none of these enzymes were derived from the sebaceous glands or the intercellular fluid. Two enzymes, which originate in the epidermis and move with the electrophoretic mobility of α1- and γ-globulins, respectively, are inhibited by eserine. Therefore, they may very well be cholinesterases. Another enzyme with γ-mobility, identical with a nonspecific esterase occurring in several internal organs, is resistent against eserine; it may possibly be derived from sweat. The origin of the other enzymes is unknown.
