2-Cyanomethyl-1-methylbenzimidazolium, 2-cyanomethylbenzothiazolium, 2-cyanomethylbenzoxazolium, and 2-cyanomethylpyridinium perchlorates react with β-diketones to give the corresponding 4-cyanopyridobenzazolium and 1-cyanoquinolizinium salts, which give polymethine dyes through the methyl groups in the α and γ positions of the pyridine ring.
