Summary

Enzyme release due to phalloidin was studied with isolated hepatocytes and with perfused livers from the rat. In isolated cells the spontaneous loss of lysosomal, mitochondrial and soluble enzymes (E.C. 3.1.1.31; E.C. 3.1.3.2; E.C. 2.6.1.1.; E.C. 2.6.1.2) was not significantly altered by phalloidin whereas the peptide triggers the release of high amounts of the enzymes from perfused livers. The results are discussed in connexion with the failure of phalloidin to induce swelling and vacuolization in isolated hepatocytes.
