Origin of carcinoma fifty years after radioactive gold seeds in benign nasopharyngeal tumours

Summary

Fifty years after treatment of a benign tumour of the nasopharyngeal region with radioactive gold seeds headaches and pareses of cerebral nerves occured. A tumour which penetrated into the middle cranial fossa was found; the implanted gold seeds were visible on X-ray. Histology showed an adenocarcinoma.

Etiology and general considerations of radiating implants are discussed.
