Summary
The possibilities of two arsine generation Systems for the determination of arsenic with the aid of inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) have been investigated. In the first technique a 5% alkaline sodium tetrahydroborate(III) solution is pumped into 40 ml of acidified sample (1 M hydrochloric acid), the arsine is introduced into a 3 kW argon ICP and peak intensities for As 228.8 nm are plotted versus arsenic concentrations. The detection limit for arsenic is 0.005 μg/ml and the relative standard deviation (RSD) at a 0.5 μg/ml concentration level is 0.07. In a second technique the acidified sample (3 M hydrochlorid acid) and the sodium tetrahydroborate(III) solution are continuously brought together in a flow-cell and a steady flow of arsine is lead into a 3.5k W argon ICP. Here the detection limit for arsenic is 0.001 μg/ml and the RSD is 0.02, provided an accurate measurement of line and background intensities, as it is possible with the aid of a high-resolving microcomputer-controlled monochromator, is applied. Concentrations of 1 mg/ml sodium and calcium and of 5 mg/ml iron in the sample solutions do not cause any matrix effects. The ICP-hydride technique using continuous arsine generation is applied to the determination of submilligram per litre concentrations of arsenic in waste waters as well as to the determination of arsenic in steel at a 0.01–0.05% concentration level.
