Summary
-
1.
The larval brain of Drosophila melanogaster shows three groups of neurosecretory cells: one frontal pair, 6–8 cells on each side of the pars intercerebralis and two cells each backwards in the ventral region of the brain. One pair of neurosecretory cells seems to exist in the ventral ganglion.
-
2.
The brain of adult flies shows at least five groups of neurosecretory cells, four of which can be traced back as far as to the larval stage. The number of cells in the pars intercerebralis ranges from 12–16 on each side. Various groups of neurosecretory cells can be found in the subesophageal and thoracic ganglion.
-
3.
In larvae the nuclear volume in neurosecretory cells and the cells of corpus allatum, fat body and prothoracic glands shows bimodal circadian oscillations. Maxima of the nuclear size appear on the 6th day of development at 20° C always 3 hours before the beginning of the light or dark time (in an artificial 12∶12 hr day). It is possible that there are phase differences of 12 hours between the curves of the nuclei of the corpus allatum and the prothoracic glands.
-
4.
In adults the nuclear volume of both the different groups of neurosecretory cells, the gland cells of the corpus cardiacum and the corpus allatum also shows bimodal oscillations, corpus allatum cells having maxima 6 hours, all the other cells 3 hours before the beginning of the 12 hr light or 12 hr dark period.
-
5.
Absorption measurements with neurosecretory cells stained with paraldehyde-fuchsin suggest that neurosecretory material migrates from the region around the nucleus towards the axon, which takes place from about the middle to the end of the period of light or darkness. Neurosecretory granules appear in the corpus cardiacum mainly at the end of the light and dark time.
-
6.
RNA staining of corpus allatum cells suggests possible changes in the distribution of RNA within 24 hours.
Zusammenfassung
-
1.
