Summary
Perchlorate-extracts of the epidermis of guinea pigs revealed several ultraviolet absorbing bands by column chromatography on Dowex 50. The most compounds, which are responsible for the absorbance, could be identified by further paper chromatography and spectral analysis.
Beside urocanic acid, known as a constituent of epidermis, for which more than half the ultraviolet absorbance at 260 nm is to account, we could find adenine, guanine, AMP, GMP, CMP and UMP as well as, at least occasionally, traces of uric acid and hypoxanthine. Thymine or its derivativs were nerver seen.
The origin of the above mentioned substances in epidermis was discussed.
