Summary
Synthetic aviation turbine oils were oxidized with air in the absence and presence of metals and the antioxidant concentrations were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography with a nitrogen-selective detector. As a measure for the antioxidative capacity of the used (aged) oils we determined the exothermic onset of oxidation by isothermal pressure differential scanning calorimetry (PDSC). The used oils were simulated by mixtures of base ester and corresponding antioxidant concentrations. By comparison it was shown that there is a substantially higher increase in thermal-oxidative stability of the used oils as measured by PDSC, than expected from the quantitative antioxidant data. The importance of the results for the determination of the maximum service life of oils is discussed.
