Summary
The practical use of differential spectrophotometry for the accurate determination of the main components is described by considering the selectivity of the reaction of the chosen ligand with the given metal ion, the stability constant of the coloured complexes and their molar absorptivity ɛ. Minimizing the errors of the sample preparation is also taken into account.
If the absorbance of the sample solution will be measured in the range affected by the minimum errors, if the reaction of the formation of the coloured complexes will run quickly and if stable complexes will be formed, than the method of differential spectrophotometry allows to attain the precision of gravimetric or volumetric methods.
Methods for the accurate determination of 80% titanium with hydrogen peroxide in titanium carbide, 40–95% iron with 1,10-phenanthroline in iron-base alloys and 60% molybdenum with thiocyanate in molybdenum disulphide are described. The best relative standard deviations amount to 0.0007–0.0018. The accuracy of the methods is examined by means of suitable reference materials.
