Additional information

I have been helped by the comments of Rogers Albritton, Philippa Foot, John McDowell, and Colin McGinn on an ancestor of this paper written in 1980, and by Crispin Wright on a more recent version. This paper was written before, and the proofs corrected after, the final version of my Sense and Content, Oxford University Press, Oxford, 1983. Where it differs from, or is more elaborate than, the treatment of colour concepts in Sense and Content, the paper supercedes the book. The book does, however, contain more elaboration of the idea of a sensational property, of which red' is but one instance.
